چکیده

THE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 695 In the hierarchy of waste management techniques it is better to prevent harmful emissions from being generated in the first place. If this laudable objective is not practically feasible, the treatment of emissions to produce less harmful substances is worthy of detailed consideration. For such waste treatment processes, the most technically and economically viable process to minimize impact on the environment and to meet emission limits specified by regulatory bodies will be a sustainable autothermal process. The basic concept behind the autothermal behaviour of systems is that the reaction heat generated in the system has to be sufficient enough to heat up the inlet reactant up to the temperature which would initiate the reaction. In emission treatments, when the focus is on methane combustion, there is a high possibility of obtaining sustainable autothermal operation. Experimental demonstration and modelling of an adsorption-enhanced reverse flow reactor for the catalytic combustion of coal mine ventilation air methane

Ventilation air methane is a major contributor to the carbon footprint of the coal mining industry. This contribution can be mitigated by combustion of methane to carbon dioxide. The use of efficient combustion devices, such as catalytic reverse flow reactors, can improve the economy of the process. However, the high water content of the ventilation air can inhibit catalysts (such as palladium)...

Chemical looping combustion process in fixed - bed reactors using ilmenite as oxygen carrier

A process scheme based on a series of fixed-bed reactors is presented as a possible alternative for carrying out the chemical looping combustion of methane at high pressure with ilmenite as oxygen carrier. The oxygen carrier is stationary and it is alternately exposed to reducing and oxidizing atmospheres by means of the periodic switching of the gas feeds (i.e., methane and air, respectively)....

repository copy of Coal mine ventilation air methane combustion in a catalytic reverse flow reactor : Influence of emission humidity

7 The role of the humidity content on the performance of catalytic reverse flow reactors (RFR) for the 8 abatement of methane emissions from coal mines is studied in this manuscript. It has been 9 demonstrated that this technique is very useful for the abatement, and even upgrading, of these 10 emissions. However, the effect of humidity on the reactor performance has not been addresses yet, 11 ...

Comparison of the Performance of a Reverse Flow Reactor and Networks of Non-stationary Catalytic Reactors for Catalytic Combustion of Methane in Lean Mixtures

Although the operation under unsteady state is generally avoided and continuous operation is preferred in the chemical industry, this mode of operation can often lead to a better performance. Because of this, forced unsteady state reactors are object of increasing interest. In particular, the systems based on the periodic reversal of the feed flow direction, called reverse flow reactors (RFR), ...

Identification of Hybrid Systems with Application to Fault Detection of a Reverse-Flow Reactor System

In this work, the suitability of several techniques for monitoring a reverse-flow reactor system are studied. Reverse reactor systems are operated by periodically reversing the direction of the flow inside the reactor [1],[2]. One benefit of a reverse-flow configuration is that, for exothermic reactions, the system exhibit a heat-trap effect [3] where the temperature profile across the reactor ...
